MAGOG — Two brothers from Sherbrooke were killed this afternoon after falling through the ice on Lake Magog in Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley.
Police say that Réal Fréchette, 52, and Denis Fréchette, 59, were headed out to ice fish in an all-terrain vehicle pulling a small trailer, when they fell through the ice around 60 meters from shore.
According to police the ice was only about one inch thick at the time.
Firefighters from Magog and North Hatley responded at around 1:50 p.m., and with the help of a rescue diver managed to locate both victims.
Both men were submerged.
Many people witnessed the incident, with one 75-year-old man attempting to rescue the two men at one point.
He also fell through the ice, but was pulled from the water and ended up being treated for hypothermia.
