Man accused of stealing from elderly citizens in Magog arrested

MAGOG — Police say that they have arrested a man who is alleged to have targeted elderly people in the area, pretending to buy jewelry from them before stealing their valuables.

Stéphane Belval, age 55, of Granby, was arrested during the investigation, and was in court to face seven counts, including unlawfully entering a dwelling, mischief and criminal harassment, on March 1.

Police say other charges could be added.

Last December, the Memphrémagog police board were made aware of 11 cases in total, where a man presented himself as a collector among elderly citizens of Magog, to gain access to their homes.

Police say once inside he went through their drawers without their consent.

In several cases, he left a business card with a phone number behind in the name of Stéphane Belval.

Investigators say the business cards, photo identification from victims, and the description of the vehicle he was driving, were used to track down the suspect.
