STANSTEAD — Authorities say that last week five people from El Salvador were picked up in Magog after they entered Canada illegally through an unguarded path in the Stanstead area.
The incident took place last Tuesday, when police say they located them on Rue Merry Nord. They say that the group included two woman and three men, one being a 14-year-old boy.
Police say that they crossed over from Vermont in Stanstead, where they were picked up in a car registered in Ontario. They were all carrying U.S. visas.
An investigation was opened up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to determine if they were involved in a smuggling network.
Police say the group of Salvadorans are seeking refugee status.
They were handed over to the Border Service Agency, where officials will determine their ability to be accepted as refugees.
